Patsey Sue Piedog was adopted from the Pueblo Animal Shelter, in Colorado, in early
January 1993. She had been picked as a stray up by Animal Control, and her people never came to claim
her. She was 5 months old, no one knew her name, and there was just one day left to live on death row.
On a cold Sunday in January 1993, she went to live in her new home with Nancy Westrell,
in Canon City, Colorado.
Patsey began to enjoy romps in the mountains, chasing marmots and squirrels, and
running around her yard like a crazy dog barking at magpies and ravens. She quickly became an adept catfood burglar,
and completed basic obedience training with a solid "C" grade point average.

Patsey's health slowly declined, as her 15 years caught up with her.
Because of arthritis, her ability to run, walk, and eventually even get herself up, diminished in the last two years.
For the last six months of her life, she suffered canine cognitive dysfunction, similar to Alzheimer's Disease.
She forgot her name, the commands and tricks she'd learned, her housebreaking skills, and where she was. She got lost
inside the house or back yard, her map memory gone. In the last weeks, she was even forgetting about food, her highest
priority in life. It seemed like it was time to let her go, hard as that would be. We said goodbye on June 25,
2007. She had a good, long life. She was the best of best friends.

ODE TO MY PIEDOG
O, Piedog!
If ever I might number the spots
and speckles dark, and patchy blots,
even could I enumerate every one,
I'd not come close to counting the fun
and loving moments with you, dear friend,
though your pedigree is some odd blend.
My loyal comrade through all these years,
you cheer my heart and mend my tears,
a fellow traveler down highways and trails.
Your cheerful grin and waving flag tail
never in a hundred lifetimes could
I forget,
the sweetest pied puppy, my Piedog pet!
